Summer is the time for healthy salads and bagged salad greens are very handy use use. Most of the bagged salad and lettuce state on them-"triple washed, ready to eat," but are they really safe to eat right from the bag? A recent study by the Consumer Union tested hundreds of bagged salad greens. Some were organic and some were conventionally grown. Forty Percent of these greens had high levels of bacteria on them.
So, the safest tips for eating bagged salad greens is to rinse thoroughly with cold water before eating. You can also add a few drops of dish washing detergent to a bowlful of water and soak veggies in that and then rinse thoroughly. A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a bowlful of water is another good and natural rinse for veggies.
By the way, if you are trying to be a good citizen and not use plastic bags for shopping, be sure you thoroughly wash any reusable bags frequently. Use a separate bag for meat so you don't get juices from the raw meat onto other purchases.
