Homemade SkinCare - Save Money with these Natural SkinCare Recipes

Interest in homemade skin care is growing as more people decide to cut toxic chemicals out of their lives, and so they turn to natural skin care recipes. Making your own homemade moisturizer, for instance, can save you lots of money in the course of a year, depending on how much you normally spend on skin care products.

You can even create organic skincare recipes if you like and if you've checked the price of skincare lines with organic ingredients, you know making your own is a great way to get a quality product at a fraction of the price of a commercial skincare line.

Once I decided to create natural homemade skincare, I turned to skin care expert, Sue Dolan's terrific little ebook, Naturally Sensational - Rejuvanating Skin Care Recipes. In Sue's 130 page e-book, you'll find the basics of making your own all homemade skincare recipes, including a handy glossery of natural ingredients and what each one does for your skin, how to get started and luscious homemade skin care recipes for:
  • Facial Mists
  • Toners
  • Cleansers
  • Moisturizers
  • Under Eye Treatments
  • Facial Wraps
  • Facial Peels
Besides homemade skincare recipes, you'll find dozens of natural skin care tips and learn why certain ingredients are important for younger looking skin.

Here is one sample recipe from the book for homemade moisturizer:

Shea Facial Butter - Shea Butter is one of the best natural anti-aging moisturizers around.

Ingredients

• 1/8 cup shea butter
• 1 teaspoon cornstarch
• 1/8 cup rose hips
• 1/2 teaspoon safflower oil

Grind the rose hips into a fine dust. Combine all ingredients together in a mini food processor and puree until smooth. Let ingredients infuse together for several hours or overnight.

Strain into clean container prior to moisturizing. (Heat the mixture briefly in the microwave if the consistency is too thick to strain after refrigeration).

Sue also gives you a long list of antiaging oils which you can substitute or use to come up with your own homemade skincare ideas. Many of the ingredients listed in these natural recipes come straight from your kitchen so you won't have to purchase a thing to get started.

Get your copy of instantly downloadable ebook, Naturally Sensational - Rejuvanating Skin Care Recipes by Sue Dolan and get started. Save money and look and feel great, knowing you're not putting more toxic chemicals into your system with your homemade skin care.

Avoid Chemicals with this Homade Hairspray Recipe

I have been trying to cut the toxic chemicals from my body care products and always thought a recipe for homemade hairspray might be hard to find. Since I live in windy north Texas and have very fine hair, hairspray is one thing I can't do without (deodorant being the other thing that's hard to do without no matter how toxic it is.)

Homemade hairspray is actually easy and inexpensive to make. The only downside is that it only keeps about 2 weeks in the frig. However, it is chemical free and it holds the hair in place so is worth the trouble.

I found several homemade hairspray recipes and the basics are these:

Ingredients

2 cups water
2 fresh lemons or oranges - preferably organic if you really want to avoid toxins

Directions for hair spray

Bring water to a boil. Allow it to boil for one minute to sterilize the water. This helps your homemade hairspray last longer.

While water is coming to a boil, peel lemons or oranges if you are not using organic and cut them into wedges. If you are using organic fruit, you can cut them up, peel and all to put into the recipe.

Allow water to boil for one minute and then lower heat to a simmer.

Add your lemon or orange chunks and simmer until fruit is soft and water is reduced by half.

Strain out fruit and pour liquid into a spray bottle. Save an old hairspray bottle that gives off a fine spray.

If you store your hairspray in the frig, you won't need to add alcohol, which can dry hair. If you do need to add a little alcohol, use SD alcohol, which is a type of denatured alcohol, which isn't so drying.

Shake well before using and store in the frig for up to two to three weeks.

Another homemade hairspray recipe I found uses only sugar and water. Find it here at dkMommy.

Homemade Sunscreens - Try This Easy Recipe

Why Use Homemade Sunscreen?

ZINC OXIDE OINTMENT FOUGERA 2 OZ
Homemade sunscreens are likely to get more popular as people seek more non-toxic or organic options to protect them from the sun. Here is a homemade sunscreen recipe that is easy to make using easy to get ingredients. I've included some links to Amazon for the ingredients if you want to save yourself a trip to various stores to get them.

Labels were misleading before but now the FDA recently came out with new guidelines for sunscreen labeling. Research shows that although use of sunscreen is up, so are cases of skin cancer. The reason for this is that people were using sunscreens which protect them from sunburn causing UVB rays but not against skin cancer and wrinkle causing UVA rays.

In order to get the most protection from your sunscreen, if you use commercial sunscreens, is to look for "broad spectrum" which protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Remember too, organic and natural ARE NOT the same thing. Look for the USDA organic seal if you want organic ingredients.

Homemade sunscreens can be organic and natural. If you want your sunscreen to be organic, make sure the ingredients are labeled that way. New FDA guidelines for broad spectrum sunscreens will be covered by the zinc oxide, which  protects from UVA and UVB rays.

Ingredients for Homemade Sunscreen Recipe

1 cup olive or almond oil
1 oz beeswax
2 oz shea butter
2 tbs 100% aloe vera
3 tbs zinc oxide

Begin with one cup of olive oil or almond oil. You can find these oils at the grocery store or local health food store. Warm the oil on low heat.

Add beeswax and shea butter and heat until they melt. Shea butter can also be purchased at your local health food store or purchased online from Amazon. Beeswax can be purchased at the same sources or from your local bee keeper.

Add Aloe Vera and mix. Make sure your product says 100% aloe vera.

Take the mixture from the heat and add the zinc oxide. This can be purchased at the local drug store under diaper rash treatments.

Blend completely and put into a sealable container. If ingredients separate as they cool, shake the container or set it into a bowl of warm water to soften.

Apply as your homemade sunscreen recipe as needed.

Remember that excessive exposure to the sun and tanning isn’t safe if you want to protect yourself from skin cancer and aging of the skin but if you go into the sun, be sure and apply sunscreen liberally.
