Healthy Weightloss Tips Video

Here's an inspiration weightloss video from Gaiam.com with some simple weightloss tips. It only takes a minute to watch. Gaiam also offers articles, forums and a supportive community for yoga, meditation, fitness and more.

Healthy weightloss should be more about a lifestyle change than going on a "diet." If you're dieting, it implies eating a certain way is a temporary thing. When you're done with the diet, you back to your old eating habits. This isn't the way to permanent weight loss.

If you think about eating healthy, more fruits and veggies, lean meat proteins, smaller portions, cutting out unhealthy fats and sugars - these should be permanent changes, not short term. That's not to say you can't have an occasional piece of chocolate cake or eat a huge meal at Thanksgiving, but overall, healthy weightloss means a change in lifestyle.

You CAN do it! Make healthy eating fun. Try new recipes, learn to use herbs and spices to make foods more delicious, visit your local farmer's market to see what delicious fruits and veggies you can incorporate into your meals. Your body will love you for it and your weight will just naturally stay where it should be with little extra effort from you.

Try these healthy weightloss tips from Gaiam.com and see how easy it can be.

What's in Your Hot Dog?

Have you ever wondered just what's in a hot dog? Should you be eating hot dogs or letting your kids eat them?

Maybe you think the all beef or all meat hot dogs are a good bet. Although they are higher in protein, beef and pork hot dogs are very high in unhealthy saturated fats, plus the meat comes, not from fresh cuts of beef and pork, but from pig and cow skeletons and meat by-products, which could be any part of the animal. Definitely not ground beef quality!

If your label says, "made with a variety of meats" this could also mean the hot dog is made from the liver, kidney and hearts of animals, which are very high in cholesterol. The liver filters wastes in the body of humans and animals so if the animals ate feed with pesticides, hormones or antibiotics, these would be in the meat of the liver also.

Hot dogs can contain up to 20% mechanically separated meats (MSM). These separated meats are "a paste-like and batter-like meat product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue," according to the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

As of 2004, hot dogs can contain no mechanically separated beef because of fears of mad cow disease. However, hot dogs can contain up to 20% mechanically separated pork, and any amount of mechanically separated chicken or turkey.

Hot dogs also contain sodium nitrate to preserve the red tint to cured meat. This has been linked to increase cancer risk and can also trigger migraine headaches.

MSG is added to hot dogs to enhance flavor and many people have adverse reactions to MSG, which the body sees as a toxic substance. Reactions such as headaches are common, without the person even being aware that MSG is the problem.

Hot Dogs contain corn syrup as a thickener and to add sweetness. Corn syrup contains no nutrients but lots of empty calories.

If you and your kids love hot dogs, look for nitrate-free, all meat and preferably organic hot dogs which contain no preservatives, by-products or fillers. These are more expensive options but will save health problems down the road for you and your family.

Summer Recipe Tasty Deviled Egg Recipe

I usually fix first deviled egg recipes of the spring at Easter dinner. Traditionally, chickens don't lay eggs in the winter so the first good eggs of the spring always went into a family deviled egg dish. When I lived in Oregon and raised my own chickens, I had dozens of extra eggs to I was always in charge of bringing the deviled eggs to the family dinner.

My own deviled egg recipe is pretty simple. I usually figure 2-3 deviled eggs per person and remember, one egg makes 2 deviled eggs. I usually cook a couple extra so I have plenty of filling for each deviled egg.

Ingredients

6 hard boiled eggs
1/4 c mayonnaise
3 Tbs mustard
1 Tbs Italian salad dressing
Salt and pepper to taste
paprika for topping

Start by choosing eggs without any cracks. A cracked egg can harbor bacteria and should always be thrown away.

Place your eggs in a medium cooking pot. Add enough cold water to cover the eggs, along with about a teaspoon of salt. This makes the eggs easier to peel later. Bring water to a boil and turn to medium heat. Cook for 10 minutes.

Once your eggs are boiled and cooled, peel off the shells. If your eggs are ultra fresh, you might have a harder time peeling them but the salt water should help that.

Slice eggs in half, being careful to keep the white part from splitting or cracking. If any of your white halves do split, put them aside. I always like to have extra yolk so the filling is fuller in each egg.

Separate the yolk and white part. Put the yolks in a bowl and put the white half on a plate.

Separate the white and yolk
Separate the white and yolk

Mash the yolks with a fork. Add all ingredients except the paprika and blend well. If your filling seems to crumbly, add a little more mayo. It's hard to say exactly how much of the mayo and mustard you need but start slow. It's easier to add more than to take away the extra and you don't want your filling to be too liquidy. You want your filling to be firm so a scoop of it piles up well on the egg white.

mash, add mustard and mayo
mash, add mustard and mayo

Scoop filling into each egg white half and arrange on a plate or dish. I usually put my deviled eggs in a 9x13 baking dish if I need to put them in the frig or transport them. Then I put arrange them on a plate just before serving.

Sprinkle paprika over the eggs to decorate.

Cover very lightly with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated until serving.

Pile filling high into egg white

This deviled egg recipe is very simple and deviled eggs make a great addition to a spring or summer meal, or add to a meal as an appetizer.

Natural Treatments for Neuropathy

Do you suffer from periferal neuropathy? Neuropathy causes a tingling, burning sensation, especially in the arms and legs and can have any number of causes. I've written before about having a tingling in my entire body, which a neurologist has been unable to diagnose but which, so far, has caused no real nerve damage. On my last visit, he said I could have small fiber neuropathy and he has some medications which could help.

The tingling and burning in my hands and feet was especially bad when I went to see him. He scheduled me for another nerve testing session since it's been 2 years since my last one. I decided to look for some natural treatments for neuropathy before the testing and medication date.

First, I've been doing relaxation exercises, which eased the tingling, calmed my fears and got me to stop thinking "What's Wrong with me and how bad will it get before I go nuts??!!" I have been using the Silva Method for Mind Body Healing, which is teaching me many great techniques for self-healing.

I also did some research on using natural cures for neuropathy, which include homeopathy. I found Dr Tom Horton's Website, Burning Neuropathy, where he sells a homeopathic treatment for neuropathy which he developed called Artaglia. Homeopathic remedies are natural and not harmful to your body like medications and Dr. Horton's neuropathy remedy got good reviews from customers and is 100% guaranteed. I decided to order some.

I'm not an affiliate for this product and I am not making a penny for recommending it so you can believe me when I say that it is really helping! I started taking Artaglia one week ago and the tingling and burning in my hands, feet and face is much less now than it was. At some times it's nearly unnoticable and I've spent 2 years feeling this tingling, burning sensation every moment of the day.

I'm going back to the neurologist for nerve testing but using homeopathic, natural remedies has enabled me to forestall using any type of drugs for neuropathy. The neurologist has already told me that drugs on ly dull the symptoms, not reverse the cause, whatever that may be, so to me, using a natural homeopathic remedy makes sense.

The Zero Point Energy Wand has also been showing great promise in relieving the pain of neuropathy through energetic healing.

If you are suffering from any type of neuropathy or burning feet, you might want to give Dr. Horton's homeopathic remedy a try and see if it works for you. I also can't overestimate the power of using your own mind to help you heal. Try some meditaion, relaxtation and visualization. If you'd like more information on the Silva Method, sign up for their free email lessons. They are extremely helpful.

What are Proper Food Portions for Maintaining Weight

Putting the proper size food portions onto your plate for each meal is key to maintaining or losing weight. What does the proper portion size of food look like? To give you visual comparisons for suitable serving sizes, eDiets.com
Nutrition Specialist Renee Brunetti, LD/N, Put together this visual aid to choosing proper food portions.

Visual examples of different size food portions:
  • 1 medium fruit -- tennis ball or tight fist
  • 1/2 cup of fruit, veggie, cooked cereal, rice or pasta -- cupcake or tight fist
  • 1 cup of raw salad -- the amount you can hold in two hands cupped together.
  • 1 medium baked potato -- computer mouse
  • 1 cup of cold cereal -- large handful or tight fist
  • 1-ounce bagel -- a yo-yo
  • 3 oz of meat, poultry or fish -- palm of a woman's hand or deck of cards
  • 1 ounce of cheese -- 4 dice or the top half of your thumb
  • 3 1/2 ounces of tofu -- 4 ice cubes
  • 1 ounce of meat, fish, chicken or poultry -- 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon -- the tip of a medium-framed woman's thumb (also, 3 tsp is equal to 1 tbs)
These food portion sizes expand with cooking:
  • 1 ounce of pasta will cook up to about 2 ounces, which is equivalent to 1/4 cup. Pasta doubles in volume.
  • 2 tablespoons of rice cook up to about 6 tablespoons, or about 1/3 cup. Rice triples in volume.
Using this guide to proper food portion size will ensure that you aren't eating too much.

One great weightloss tips for making it seem like you have more food is to use a smaller plate to put it on. Use a small place and pile it high with the servings above. You'll have no trouble maintaining your weight or losing, if that is your goal.

Need Healthy Summer Snack Ideas?

Do you want to eat healthy snacks but often find yourself reaching for a bag of chips instead? The key to healthy snack options is to keep healthy foods on hand so you'll be prepared when a snack attack strikes.

Snacking is actually important for maintaining blood sugar and energy levels. We want to feed our children healthy, nutritious foods so, instead of eating foods laden with fat and calories, but lacking in nutrition, try some of the healthier snack foods from this list. It will help you lose weight, get healthy and feel more energetic.

  • Oatmeal can be a healthy snack and not just a breakfast food. Oatmeal contains protein, carbs, vitamins and fiber. It's simple to make -- and cheap! -- plus you can add berries or fruit to make it even more nutritious. You can also bake oatmeal bars and cookies to get healthy oatmeal into your snacks.
  • Apples are a quick and easy snack and you can take an apple anywhere with you. to grab and take with you anywhere. Apples are perfectly portioned in serving size, they contain fiber, nutrients and are easy on the budget.
  • Yogurt contains calcium for bone health and are a great source of protein for muscles and energy too. Yogurt is also great for the digestion and is easy to take with you too.
  • Berries of all kinds are in season in the summer and are number one on every superfood listing. You can eat them plain or add to that yogurt you're eating.
  • Drink Tea - We all need hydration in the summer so if water gets boring, try some super healthy green tea. It's filled with antioxidants and contains no calories. You can get many fruit-flavored versions now too if you don't like plain green tea. Try making green tea Popsicles for the kids too!
  • Nuts are super healthy and kids love them. Keep sunflower seeds, peanuts and mixed nuts on hand but purchase the dry roasted nut versions. Regularly roasted nuts are usually roasted in partially hydrogenated fats or trans-fats. Nuts contain lots of heart-healthy fats, vitamin E and zinc.
  • Make your own trail mix or granola and have the kids help.
  • Try this easy energy bar recipe.
  • Make a fruit and cheese try with a variety of fruits, cheese, whole grain crackers and even some carrot sticks.
  • Make your own yogurt dip for fruits and veggies, instead of using sour cream. Kids love dips and it will make them eat more of the healthy stuff.

Losing Weight with Nutri-Systems

My Nutri-systems food is set to be delivered today and I can't wait to get it! Until it comes, though, I've been looking at all the Nutri-Systems website has to offer in the way of help. Each Nutri-systems member has their own area to log into where I can keep track of my weight, calories, even the number of glasses of water I drink.

July 1 is a great time to start on a new weightloss plan. One month from today I hope to have lost 10 lbs at least so that is my goal.

I love the calorie counter. You can put in the Nutri-Systems foods you eat for each meal and then add different items like veggies, fruit or a protein and it figures the calories for you. You have an exercise log, a place to put your measurements and your weight, plus you can keep a weightloss journal if you want to.

The exercise part of the Nutri-systems website is great! I put in the exercise I do and it figures the calories burned. Today will be a good day for exercise. I walked the dogs for 20 minutes at a slow pace (they like to sniff!), I have a one hour yoga class and I'll use the treadmill for 30 minutes after class. My total daily exercise will burn off 650 calories! - Although in my opinion, the yoga class I'm in burns more than 200 calories. It's much more of a workout than I'd thought it would be.

The Nutri-systems website also computes your BMI from your height and weight. My BMI is at 25 right now, which is the low end of overweight so it's a good thing I'm losing those ugly 15-20 lbs in the next couple months.

I'll keep you posted on the Nutri-systems Program and what I think of the food and the entire experience. The number one thing is- Will Nutri-systems help me lose weight?
