Not Sure I'd have liked Living in the 1800's
Recently, I've been researching women's lives in Texas during the 1800's as part of a new project. As much as I love history, maybe as time has marched on in my own life, I've gotten more comfortable in a world with flat screen TV's, on-demand movies and hot and cold running water - not to mention indoor plumbing.
Reading women's journals about life in the 1800's frontier sure does give you first hand knowledge of just how tough these women were. They crossed thousands of miles in wagons and boats, with their cattle and pigs, their few possessions and usually half a dozen children in tow. Their kids and animals drowned or died of illness and disease, they lived in tents, fought off hoards of mosquitoes and eked out a living. Half the time their husbands were off fighting the Mexican army, leaving them to find for themselves.
One saying I came across was that "Texas was heaven for men and dogs and hell for women and oxen." How true.
It gives you an appreciation for the life they scratched out of the mud and wilderness. It was women who insisted on churches, schools and social get-togethers which created a society. It was women who fought for the lives of their children, nursed the sick and wounded and gathered wild flowers for the mantel.
We do have it much easier than these women but they are still part of us. Today women still show their metal by juggling child raising, cooking, shopping and working, all hopefully with grace and style and a smile plastered on their face.
Reading about where we've been has truly given me an appreciation for my life and for the conveniences I take for granted. What I'd like to hold on to from the past is the strength and love of family and country that made these ordinary women heroes.

I Only Wish I'd had an Organic Baby
I've always been interested in alternative medicine, natural living and organics but back when she was a baby, there weren't many organic or non-toxic foods and products. My daughter was also a very picky eater and existed for about 2 years on turkey ham (with nitrates!), cheese and grapes. Oh those grapes, probably dripping with pesticides. She loved apple juice too and about the time she was 2 there was a report of all the pesticides making their way into the finished apple juice products.
When I go to the grocery store these days, I only wish back then I'd had as much choice of what to feed my daughter or what products to use for her and our home. As she got older and more products became available, I used them. I planted my own veggies so I could control what went into growing them. My daughter loved strawberries so I planted a strawberry bed (strawberries are usually high on the polluted fruit list if conventionally grown). We took vitamins and started our day with a supercharge smoothie, which we still do now.
I can only hope that the changes we made later in her life will decrease the chances that those early exposure to toxins won't cause damage to her cells.
What drew me to Miessence as a product, when I first heard of them, was that they had organic skin care products. My daughter still has a few problems with skin breakouts and I felt the organics for problem skin would help her - and it did! Even though I use Miessence skin products, their organic toothpaste and organic cleaning products, I'm still in the "mother mode" of buying organics with my daughter in mind.
Recently, Miessence has introduced some new products that I only wish I'd had when my daughter was tiny. Miessence now has organic baby powders, lotions, body washes and more, which will protect babies from absorbing all the potentially toxic ingredients found in most skin care products.
On the Miessence website you can find a list of the potentially toxic ingredients which are in most commercial skin and body care products. You can compare the list to your current products. Check out this list of toxic ingredients
Even if you don't use Miessence, I urge you to try organics on your babies and children. I truly believe that all the toxins in the air, water and products that little bodies are exposed to is now causing the rise in cancer and other life altering diseases and illness. The only way to protect children is to try and limit this exposure.
If you'd like to check out the Miessence organic baby products click here. Miessence offers a wonderful opportunity for a home business, selling quality products that really help mothers and their families. It gives you a chance to use the products at a discount and make some money too.

Following Your Dreams - Is an Addiction Distracting You?
Recently I joined Bob Doyle's Boundless Living 45 Day Challenge
The Challenge concerns choosing a goal and focusing on it for 45 days, overcoming any limiting beliefs that might get in the way. This goal was to be something that was something that's always "nagged" at us to do but for whatever reason, we've never done it.
I've chosen my goal and I suddenly realized what's really been standing in the way of, not only this goal, but others in my life - lack of true focus.
Today many people believe the most efficient way to get through their day is to multi-task. Most of the time in my life, even if I"m talking on the telephone, I'm also answering emails, browsing the internet, folding laundry or doing the dishes. I work on articles and listen to recorded interviews at the same time, I read ebooks and flip back and forth to email, I work on several projects at one time. Yet, studies have been done recently that prove those who multi-task actually get less done, not more. When concentration is broken and tasks are changed, then it takes a shifting period of time to get that concentration back again and people are really less efficient.
Sometimes I've wondered, with all the time I spend online, why my businesses aren't growing. Why my health website doesn't currently have 1,000 pages instead of 300. Why I've never written the book I've always thought I wanted to write.
I suddenly saw that the reason I hadn't accomplished more is that I allow too much distraction during my work time. I check and answer emails many times a day, I follow links in emails and n website to "more information", I join forums in the name of promoting my businesses and end up getting distracted by discussions that have nothing to do with my primary goal, I sign up for free ebooks and newsletters, which I start reading and then feel guilty about not finishing.
My "to-do" list keeps growing and my accomplishments aren't keeping up.
I know I should start my day with meditation (meditation helps us learn to focus) but instead I jump on the computer to see what's new and exciting. I know every day I should be working on my to do list but somehow other things carry off my time and attention.
In the Boundless Living Challenge, Bob is giving us to tools to overcome limiting beliefs and so for the next 45 days, I intent to focus on my primary goal and let the other stuff slide. All the newsletters, ebooks and emails will still be there when I'm done.

Is Eco-Living Really New?
Eco living is all the rage right now but I've been interested in eco-living since I was a kid. Back then though, we didn't call it that. I grew up on a small family farm where we raised our own beef, pigs and chickens. We drank fresh milk from the cows and ate fresh eggs laid by the chickens. Our huge vegetable garden was fertilized with composted manure from the animals and all of our table scraps went into a compost pile.
My mother worked from dawn to dusk, making our clothes, growing our food and then preserving it. She gathered eggs and sold that and the milk to our neighbors. She hung laundry on the clothes line outdoors and fed and milked cows right along with my dad. There was no inequality of pay in our family. They both worked for the common goal of feeding our family.
As kids we got to run free around our rural neighborhood. We spent our days at the creek or on the mountain behind our house. Nobody ever thought we'd get stolen. There were no cell phones to keep in touch. We showed up for meals and the rest of the time we were off being kids.
I didn't wear that many hand-me-downs but only because I was the oldest. My two sisters wore my old clothes though. We got a couple new outfits when school started and a fancier one - with shoes - at Easter. Our Christmas presents were clothes and ONE toy that we most especially wanted. Nobody had heard of designer clothes and NOBODY ever suspected that kids could also be consumers.
For fun my parents used to take us to the A&W Root Beer stand for a root beer float and once in a great while, not often, we went out to eat. The rest of our meals were all home cooked and mostly home raised, as well. Nothing we ate came from a package and we'd never heard of "processed" food.
We had no toxins in our air and water, no chemicals or pesticides on our food.
For all these reasons, it saddens me to see how much the world has changed. I'm happy to see the green living movement going strong. Perhaps we can keep what was good about the past, even while enjoying the conveniences and benefits of the modern world.

Chico Bags - Reusable Shopping Bags on a Keychain
So what is a Chico Bag? It's an easy to use, convenient reusable shopping bag. This one is feather light nylon fabric but it holds up to 20lbs of groceries. What makes the Chico Bag so unique is it folds up neatly into it's own sewn in little bag, conventiently hooked to a key chain. This tiny bag is about the size of your cell phone.
You can always have a few Chico bags stuffed into your purse, pocket or hooked to your keychain.
One problem with most reusable bags is that you have to remember to take them to the store. With the Chico Bag, it can always be right there with you folded into it's own tiny bag. These reusable shopping bags are also completely washable so tiny spills don't matter.
Recently we went to my stepdaughter's destination wedding in Cancun. She is from Chico, CA and one of the items she put into everybody's Out of Town Gift Bag was a Chico Bag. We all loved them! In fact, I ordered a few more.
Recently we went to Central Market and had a basket full of grocery items. I handed 2 Chico Bags to the girl who was bagging up our things and all but 2 loaves of bread fit into the Chico Bags. We had some fairly heavy things too. I was very impressed.

Don't Have Time to Eat Healthy?
So you grab a frozen pizza and head out the door. You feel guilty but you promise yourself you'll sit down this weekend and plan some healthy, nutritious menus and do some real shopping.
Does this sound like your life? Even if you're married with no kids or single, life is hurried and stressful, leaving little time for elegant menu planning or putting together healthy salads. You end up with no energy and perhaps getting constant colds and flu from a lowered immune system or maybe even suffering from some more serious health problem like fibromyalgia or diabetes.
Many, if not all, health problems are related to life style choices. Eating healthier each and every day protects you from illness and disease and, if you are suffering from health issue right now, good nutrition can improve most any condition.
So now you're convinced you need to improve your nutrition but what can you do? You'll always be busy and stressed out, plus fresh fruits and veggies, especially organic, are not always in the budget.
I had exactly the same problems. I worked, I had a teen age daughter who didn't want to eat right, a husband with high blood pressure and high blood sugar, and I was overweight and out of sorts. What I discovered is that by starting our day with a green tea smoothie, filled with natural, whole food products, we could start our day with all the nutrition we needed for living a healthier life, even if we didn't always find time to eat perfectly at other times.
For convenience and our budget, I've discovered that Uri Life's The Feast and Beyond Berries beat all other products out there. I've tried Sunrider products and Juice Plus in the past but I've found The Feast and Beyond Berries to be cost effective, high quality products that supply everything we need in our diets. The Feast even contains miracle chia seeds.
Try a sample of Uri Life's The Feast and Beyond Berries
These two whole food powders are tasty in smoothies or just mixed in water or juice. Your kids will love them too and you won't have to worry about their nutrition any more. My daughter even makes her green tea smoothie with The Feast and Beyond Berries while she's at college. She's never gotten any of the colds and flu that runs through the campus and which lays all her friends low.
