Miracle Chia Seeds

When you think Chia Seeds, you probably think of those little Chia pets that are so popular at Christmas time. Think again. The chia seed is the newest in superfoods and a terrific addition to your diet.

Chia seeds were a staple food source for the Native American and Aztec people for centuries. The amazing chia seed contains:
  • B Vitamins
  • Omega 3 fatty acids
  • Fiber
  • Boron
  • Protein
  • Antioxidants
  • Calcium
Adding Chia Seeds to your diet helps with:

  • weight loss
  • diabetes
  • heart disease
  • digestive disorders
  • diabetes
  • bone health
Chia seeds contain up to 60% omega-3 fatty acids, higher than any plant that's known. They have the added benefit that they don't need to be ground up, like flax seeds, for instance.

Between 19-23% of the weight of chia seeds is protein, which is also higher than any other seed or grain.

Chia seeds contain about 5 times the calcium of milk, plus it contains boron, which also supports bone health.

Since chia seeds absorb up to 30 times their weight in water, they add 4-5 grams of fiber to your diet with a 15 gram serving. We need to consume 35+ grams of fiber per day and 1 tbs of chia

Combined with the high protein content, chia seeds are a dieter's dream. They balance blood sugar and fill you up, plus give you much needed protein to help build muscle.

The gel formed when Chia seeds are mixed with water creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. This causes the carbs to be digested at a slow, uniform rate so there is no insulin surge or spike in blood sugar after eating chia seeds.

How Much Chia Seed Should You Eat?

Recommendations for consuming chia seeds are at least 2-4 tablespoons per day.

So just how do you use Chia seeds? Simply add them to anything you currently eat. They have little to no flavor so you can put them in your morning smoothie, yogurt or cereal.

How to Use Chia Seed

To make chia seed gel, simply put 9 parts of water into a sealable plastic container. Slowly pour one part seed into the water, then mix with a wire whisk or fork. This process will avoid clumping of the seed. Wait a few minutes and stir again to break up any clumps there are. Let stand 10 minutes and stir again. Store up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Add any of this gel to foods such as peanut butter, jams, jellies, tartar sauce and more to promote energy and endurance.

Where Can I Buy Chia Seed in Bulk?

Purchase a one pound package of chia seeds here for just $9.69.

We use Chia Seed gel every morning in our Calli Tea Smoothie. Try some today and enjoy greater health and vitality.

Summer Health Tips for Busy Moms!

Let's face it - in the business of summer time, it's hard to stick to our health regime. The kids are home from school, creating a wonderful chaos, we're busy with outdoor activities, barbeque's, camping and outings. When we barely have time to comb our hair in the mornings, it's no wonder we forget basic things like taking our vitamins, drinking lots of water and going to yoga class.

One way to make sure you take care of yourself , as well as everyone else, in the summer is to be organized. If you're a mom, you are probably used to that!

For me, it isn't' so much the kids - who are all grown now - it's the grand kids making life hurried and busy. Here's what I do to make sure my health regime doesn't suffer in the summer months.

  • Get up a bit earlier - It's amazing what you can do for yourself with an extra 30 minutes a day. Get out your vitamins - or better yet, get out a whole week's worth and put each day in a zip lock snack bag, have a cup of coffee and read the paper, while eating some nutritious whole grain cereal or do some yoga stretches.
  • Take advantage of nap times to spend time on a hobby or read a book. If the kids are too old for naps, institute "quiet time" every afternoon for an hour or two. I had my own daycare for years and for 2 hours every afternoon, while the kids slept, I had my hobby - bead work. Sometimes those 2 relaxing hours made all the rest possible.
  • For dinner, think nutritious salads. Let the kids help with shopping for ingredients and preparation. They'll be more likely to eat some! Ask the kids what sort of veggies they would like to eat and then buy some. You might be surprised at what they choose. Make a game of choosing a new veggie each week and finding recipes on the Internet on ways to use it.
  • Get your exercise by taking the kids outdoors for a walk in the park or a bike ride. Take them swimming and you get in the water too. Swimming is great exercise!
  • Laughter is the best medicine for stress. Take a break and watch a funny movie with the kids.
  • Don't let summer stress get you down. Remember, all the tasks and to-do lists will still be there when summer is over. Take a break and do the minimum for a while. Take deep breathes and relax and enjoy your kids. They're only young once!
Another important thing I do for myself each and every day, summer and winter, is to drink an easy, nutritious smoothie each morning. I use Uri Life whole food powders that are quick, handy and nutritious. The Feast contains:
  • 30 Antioxidant Rich Fruits & Berries
  • 30 Powerful Greens & Vegetables
  • 11 Nutrient Dense Seeds, Nuts & Sprouts
  • 83+ Active Enzymes & Fulvic Minerals
  • 22 Strains of Resilient Living Probiotics

Tomato Scare - What to Do?

Since this blog is about health, and recently tomatoes have been causing salmonellosis poisoning, I thought this would be a great time to talk about the safety of our food supply. At the end of this article, I will post a link to the FDA's website where you can find out the latest safety info.

So far, the FDA hasn't been able to pin down the source of these tomatoes but some states have been cleared. The FDA is also saying it's safe to eat cherry and grape tomatoes, those still on the vine in the store and those grown at home by consumers.

Here in Texas, there have been 35 cases of sickness as of today. The recent scare, however, is just the tip of the iceburg on the subject of the safety of our food supply. At the end of this article, I will put a link to further reading on the shocking truth about the "healthy" foods in America.

Here are some things I'm doing to protect myself and my family.

1. I belong to an organic food coop which gave us half dozen great tomatoes this week. These are all locally and organically grown by trusted sources.

2. I picked up a package of sun-dried tomatoes at the store yesterday for recipes. Did you know that eating sun dried tomatoes twice a week reduces a man's risk of prostate cancer by 35%?

3. To get whole food nutrition from a reliable source, I eat The Feast and Beyond Berries every day. Every scoop of The Feast provides 1000’s of naturally occurring nutritional compounds from fresh wholefood concentrates and 70+ nutrient dense concentrates from fresh live whole foods.

Dr Miller's Holy Tea - 1 Month SupplyI recently sent for a terrific little book "Savory Herbal Cookery" by Deborah Barnes. I'd read that you could dry the Holy Tea bags and use the loose tea in recipes but had no idea how much to use or in what recipes. This book answered my questions.

Just in Time for Summer - How I Lost 10 Pounds This Spring

I practice the 80/20 rule in my life. For 80% of the time, I try to eat right, exercise daily, take my vitamins and keep my weight down. Still, that 20% can derail the best of intentions in the weight department! Over Christmas, we had a house full of people visiting, complete with family dinners, lots of goodies and, being busy, not much time to exercise.

Couple that with starting some new projects that kept me glued to the computer chair in January and February, I discovered in March that I could stand to lose a few pounds. Especially since my daughter is getting married in Mexico at the end of June and I needed to pick out a swimsuit - something I hadn't done in years!

Here was my plan:
  • I started an exercise class at the local Y
  • I went back to taking my CLA - a natural supplement that helps get rid of belly fat.
  • I stepped up my daily walk by about 15 minutes a day
  • I started using Holy Tea - a natural detox. Toxins are trapped in your body in fat cells so when you lose weight, the fat cells dissolve and the toxins are released so detox is very important.
  • I checked my diet to see where I could improve.
Shakeology is a super nutrition program which contains whole superfoods and:
  • minerals
  • vitamins
  • enzymes
  • probiotics
  • antioxidants
  • amino acids
  • essential fatty acids
  • phytonutrients
  • fiber
  • 70 nutrient dense concentrates from fresh, live whole foods

Feed your body whole, nutritious foods and watch the pounds come off. I've been on Shakeology for about a month and lost my first 5 pounds without even trying. I feel more energy, more focused and healthier.

If you need to lose 10 pounds this spring so you look great for summer, try Dr Miller's Holy Tea and Shakeology together and you'll be looking and feeling great in no time!

Do You Need A Wellness Vacation This Summer?

If you're like me, your life is hectic. You balance work, kids, relationships, housework....the list is endless - and stressful! It might sound indulgent to take a wellness vacation to ..gasp!....relax. Who relaxes these days?

This is exactly the reason you need a wellness vacation. Relaxing is becoming a lost art in these days of cell phones, laptops and blackberries but stress is collectively killing us and is certainly making us short tempered to boot.

So how do you take a wellness vacation? There are many types and you can tailor your vacation to suite yourself and your family. Just going off to an exotic local like Hawaii or a Mexican resort can sure take your mind off your troubles for a while. Trips are available for a few days or weeks, whichever you can afford.

Anyplace you go, unless you're camping in the desert, offers an opportunity to pamper yourself with a massage, facial or mud baths. Many hotels also offer wellness programs for the health-seeking traveler.

Spas, hotels and retreats offer many different wellness vacation packages where you can learn new yoga poses, learn how to meditate or will help you get in touch with your spiritual side. You can also go on weight loss retreats, study nutation and eat organic food or try more exotic beauty treatments like vinotherapy.

No matter where you go, you're sure to find opportunities to go for a quiet walk on a warm sandy beach at sunset or a hike in a tropical rain forest. Take advantage of the quiet moments so you'll come home refreshed.

Whatever sort of wellness vacation you take, the idea is to renew the spirit and come home relaxed and rejuvenated, ready to face the work-a-day world of jobs, paying bills and running the kids to football and volleyball practice.

Take a mini wellness vacation at home.

If you can't take a trip someplace, take a day for yourself and go someplace new and different. Take a walk in a park where you've never been and stroll easily along. Sign up for a spa day at a local spa. Take a meditation or yoga class for the summer. Run your bath tub full of fragrant bubbles, lock the door, light the candles and turn on some soothing music and soak for a full decadent hour.

Learning to relax is one of the most important keys to long-lasting good health. People who meditate and practice yoga daily sleep better and feel more peaceful about life. Relaxation boosts your immune system, making you less susceptible to illness and disease.

Isn’t your health and peace of mind worth a little relaxation time? Take a wellness vacation for a week, a day or an hour. You owe it to yourself!

Do You Need a Colon Cleanse?

When I first read about colon cleansing, I wasn't sure I needed it. I had good bowel habits, ate lots of fiber and felt healthy. The more I researched the idea of colon cleansing though, the more I thought it was an idea worth trying.

Dr Miller's Holy Tea - 1 Month SupplyColon cancer is a highly preventable type of cancer. Yet, in 2008, an estimated 108,070 new cases or colon cancer and 40,740 cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed. There will be nearly 50,000 deaths from colon and rectal cancer combined in 2008 in the United States.

One of the absolute best defenses against colon cancer and other diseases of the colon is to cleanse your colon and keep it free of toxic mucoid plaque that builds up and to watch for the signs of an unhealthy colon BEFORE they lead to the formation of polyps or cancer tumors.

Here are some common signs of an unhealthy colon:

    • Headaches
    • backaches
    • sciatic pain
    • constant fatigue
    • frequent colds
    • food allergies
    • skin problems
    • rashes and dermatitis
    • chronic constipation
    • acid reflux
    • bad breath or halitosis
    • bad body odor
    • foul smelling gas
    • excessive flatulence
    • diarrhea
    • visible mucus in the stools
    • bloating
    • protruding abdomen
    • yeast infection
    • irritability
    • inability to concentrate
    • and many other problems, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease, colitis, diverticulitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Irritable bowel syndrome is also known as irritable colon, spastic colon, nervous bowel, and mucous colitis. Symptoms include recurrances of bloating, abdominal cramps, constipation, diarrhea and excess gas.
A good method of cleansing should also eliminate toxins from all systems of your body, not just the colon. Toxins not eliminated by the body are stored in fat tissue, joints, arteries, muscles, liver, and all other organs, causing life altering health problems .

There are many methods of cleaning the colon through diet, special colon cleansing teas or kits, and special drinks like the lemonade diet. The product I use and trust is Holy Tea, a safe, natural detoxing tea made of Holy Thistle. It's safe enough to drink every day or you can drink it 2-3 times a year for a good clean out of your colon.

Holy Tea eliminated large quantities of toxic waste from all systems of the body, including the colon, so all the systems of your body can work together in balance to bring you optimum health.
